I participated in a Library Journal webcast on September 27, 2017, along with New York University’s Iris Bierlein and Emerald Publishing’s Kat Palmer, called “Smoothing the Path of the Research Journey: Designing for User Experience Excellence in Academic Libraries.” Shortly thereafter, Library Journal interviewed me about user experience solutions for libraries. The article, “University of Michigan’s Rachel Vacek Has Solutions for Librarians,” was published in November 2017.

Library Journal Movers and Shakers from 2014

Library Journal

I am honored to be a 2014 Library Journal Mover & Shaker. Ian Chant, an editor at Library Journal, later interviewed me as part of a series of academic librarian interviews to learn more about how I “did a lot with a little,” making the most of the microgrants available at the University of Houston Libraries to produce events that reached out to the campus and community alike.

I was attending the 2014 Code4Lib Conference and was interviewed by Lisa Rabey about my experiences in the technical side of librarianship, including struggles with gender roles. In August 2014, I was interviewed by Erik Boekesteijn from This Week in Libraries, a weekly internet video show that brings libraries around the world up to date with the latest trends in libraries. In episode “TWIL #114: Rachel Vacek (President at Library & Information Technology Association)”, Erik and I discussed leadership and mentoring in libraries, my work with micro-grants and innovation, and the importance of strategic planning.

Circulating Ideas

I was interviewed by Steve Thomas from Circulating Ideas in March 2013 when I was running for President of the Library & Information Technology Association.

The Daily Cougar

In October 2010, I led a team for Knowbility’s Accessible Internet Rally for Houston (AIR-Houston), an accessibility competition for web designers and developers to partner with nonprofit organizations to build new websites or enhance existing ones to make them more accessible. We built a new accessible website for Stage Presence Performing Arts Studio in one day and came in 2nd place. Darlene Campos, a student reporter for The Daily Cougar, the University of Houston’s student newspaper, interviewed me and the article was published in January 2011.
